What is Levulan Therapy PDT?
Levulan which is a form of “Photodynamic therapy” (PDT) uses a light-activated chemical to target abnormal skin cells. This quick and powerful treatment can help correct a wide array of skin imperfections and restore a glowing, healthy complexion. This is also good as an alternative treatment to chemical peels and topical skin creams.
What aesthetic skin conditions can Levulan PDT treat?
Levulan combined with Blue-U PDT is powerful enough to treat actinic keratosis lesions (a potentially pre-cancerous patch of thick, scaly, or crusty skin) but it can also be used for aesthetic purposes such as:
- Sun damaged skin
- Inflammatory rosacea
- Visual effects of aging such as fine lines and wrinkles
- Dark age spots (also called “liver spots”)
- Stubborn acne, overactive sebaceous glands and hidradenitis suppurativa
- Hypo-pigmented scars
- Enlarged pores
The treatment can be customized in intensity to suit your individual skin rejuvenation needs and restore your skin to a beautiful, healthy state.
How does Levulan PDT Therapy work?
The Levulan Kerastick is a prescription solution that when activated by Blue U light causes a reaction which destroys the abnormal cells. These treatments are highly customizable for the individual needs of the patient.
What results can I expect?
In addition to relieving the symptoms of various skin conditions listed above, your overall skin tone and texture will improve to reveal a more luminous complexion. Fine lines may be minimized, pores will appear less prominent, and spots will fade as your skin heals from the treatment.
Are there any side effects?
Levulan treatments can be performed at varying degrees of intensity depending on the length of time that the Levulan is left on the skin prior to being activated by the light treatment (the “incubation” period). A milder treatment will cause only mild redness and swelling for a few days. If you choose to do an aggressive treatment, you can expect to have marked redness and swelling that may last from 3-7 days (or even longer in some cases). Peeling and/or superficial crusting is expected after a Levulan treatment, and occurs between days 3-6. As the peeling process is completed, you will begin to see the new, fresh skin that is growing in. Depending on the aggressiveness of the treatment, you may need anywhere from 1-2 aggressive treatments, or up to 5 less aggressive treatments. Levulan treatments are usually spaced 3-5 weeks apart.
How should I care for my skin after the treatment?
Any visible light will continue to cause activation of the Levulan after the incubation period. For this reason, you must strictly avoid exposure to sunlight for at least 24 hours after the Levulan is applied to your skin. Depending on what time of day the treatment is done, this may include having a driver take you home so you can shield your face from sunlight during travel.
