How Does Laser Hair Removal Work to Permanently Reduce Hair Growth?
The laser targets melanin – the dark brown pigment in the hair follicle that gives hair its color. For this reason, the treatment is only effective on dark colored hair. Laser hair removal is not effective on blond hair, gray/white hair, red hair, or even lighter brown hair in some cases. The ideal candidate for laser hair removal has light skin and dark hair. The treatment heats the follicle and surrounding tissue, permanently damaging the follicle so that it is unable to grow a new hair. The treatment is only effective on hairs that are in the active phase of their growth cycle. The majority of hairs are in their dormant, or resting, phase at any given time. This is why multiple treatments are necessary for permanent hair reduction.
How Many Treatments Will I Need?
Typically it will require at least 4-6 treatments to permanently reduce the number of regrowing hairs by about 80%. Adherence to the recommended treatment schedule will maximize your results. We generally treat every 6 weeks for the face, and every 8 weeks for the body. Additional treatments will be needed if you want to reduce the small number of remaining follicles and occasionally for “touch-up” treatments if regrowth is seen at a later time. The face is a particularly stubborn area for women as hormones and other factors can cause continued hair growth after multiple treatments.
Is It Safe?
Laser hair removal is one of the aesthetic industry’s most well-known and researched uses of lasers. The Soprano XL laser is FDA approved and represents the newest and most comfortable technology available.
What Should I Do Before A Treatment?
Shave the treated area a day or so prior to your laser treatment. Do not tweeze, pluck, wax, or use a chemical depilatory for 2-3 weeks prior to your laser treatment. Do not use artificial tanners for a week prior to your treatment as they serve as a barrier to the light penetrating effectively to the follicle. Remove any skin creams or makeup from the skin prior to your laser treatment.
What Should I Do For My Skin After A Treatment?
Your skin should look and feel fine after your treatment. You may see a tiny red bump at the base of each hair follicle for a few hours after your treatment – this is called a follicular response, and demonstrates that the treatment was effective and caused inflammation and damage of the hair follicle (the desired response). In the unlikely event that you feel skin irritation, you may apply aloe vera gel or cool compresses. Avoid applying astringents or other harsh chemicals to the treated skin until any sensitivity has resolved. You may use ibuprofen, naproxen, or Tylenol for any discomfort. Cosmetics or skin care products may be resumed immediately after your treatment if there is no skin irritation.
What Happens After Each Treatment?
The follicles that are dark, actively growing, and have an intact hair in them should be immediately killed. It will take 2-3 weeks for the hairs in these follicles to be released and shed. After 2-3 weeks, you will enter the “hair-free interval” – during which you should see a noticeable reduction in the amount of hair present on the treatment area. About 1-2 weeks before your next treatment is due, you will begin to see new hair growth. This represents new follicles waking up that were in their dormant phase before and are now entering their active phase of growth. These will be targeted at the next treatment. Over time, there are fewer and fewer follicles left to regrow and an overall reduction in the amount of hair present.
What About Sun?
You should avoid intentional sun exposure for at least 2 weeks prior to each laser hair removal treatment. We recommend using daily SPF 30 on the treatment area during the entire treatment period.
How is the Soprano XL Different than traditional laser hair removal?
The Soprano XL fires 10 times a second at a very low energy setting, as opposed to other machines that use one big often painful pulse of energy. This makes it safer and much more comfortable. We can treat all skin types, including darker skin with this laser.
